Technical

Experience the bigger picture

Technical is involved in every stage of the house building process, from initial feasibility studies on a piece of land to the delivery of final layouts to our sales teams. As such, it’s the best place to be if you’re keen to experience the bigger picture.

Our technical teams think about every single detail so that we create beautifully designed homes that have superb ‘kerb appeal’. For each location, they create the architectural and engineering designs that will form the basis of the new development. They’ll provide working drawings to our build teams, but their involvement doesn’t end there. Far from it. They’ll be on hand to provide expert advice at every stage of the construction process. Join us here, and you can expect to be everything from an architect, highway designer, landscape designer, structural engineer and an interior designer all in the same day.

It all makes for a hugely varied career. Whatever your role, you can expect to play an integral part in the entire development lifecycle. You’ll also work with a wide range of people. The professional face of Redrow, you’ll engage with everyone from local planning authorities and county councils to the Environment Agency and the fire service. At every stage of the process, you’ll take real pride in the award-winning developments you’ll be helping to create.

  • I enjoy being involved with a range of different details and scenarios. Each day seems to be a massive learning curve.
    Antony – Trainee Technical Co-ordinator

    Our People

AntonyAntony joined Redrow in August 2015 as a Technical Graduate, and was soon after promoted to a Trainee Technical Co-ordinator. He was particularly interested in our Technical Graduate Scheme after hearing positive feedback about Redrow and the Graduate opportunities we provide.

“I am widely involved in the general management and co-ordination of a number of projects we have going in the London Boroughs. My weeks tend to be split; I spend roughly 3-4 days in our main office and 1 or 2 days based on site. When in the office my days are normally filled up with various meetings and correspondence with a wide range of consultants. Then, when I am on site, I review various drawing packages and walk around site to ensure that the construction process is running smoothly.

I enjoy being involved with a range of different details and scenarios. Each day seems to be a massive learning curve and I am particularly proud of the knowledge I have attained so far. In particular, being able to confidently take on and complete various packages and tenders involved with the construction of complex projects.”

  • Redrow offer excellent training courses to help you grow within the business and enhance your role"
    Penny – Group Technical Co-ordinator

    Our People

Penny started at Redrow in 2014 as Senior Architectural Technician with Group Design and Technical,  after spending several years in private practice.

Penny was subsequently promoted to Group Technical Coordinator in 2015 where she took on further responsibility in assisting with the management and leadership of the design and technical team.

“My role as technical coordinator involves dealing with technical queries from all divisions, visiting the sites to ensure the houses are built to Group specifications, amending/ creating drawings, liaising with external companies and coordinating the team to ensure drawings are published on time.

To assist me in my role as Technical Coordinator, Redrow offered me a 6 day Management and Leadership Course held at the training centre in Tamworth, which provided some very useful tools and advice.

In Summer 2016 Redrow provided the opportunity to work towards gaining Chartered Status with the CIOB via a series of workshops to assist in applying for the Professional Review. The workshops that Redrow provided offered excellent guidance and assistance in progressing towards chartered membership status. I submitted my application shortly after the workshops and in December 2016 I was accepted by the CIOB and became a Chartered Construction Manager, entitling me to use the designation MCIOB.

Redrow offer excellent training courses tailored to individual needs to help you to grow within the business and enhance your role, progressing your career.”

  • It’s the greatest experience for someone who has recently finished high school and started college
    Brianne – Trainee Designer

    Our People

brianeBrianne joined our Midlands division in 2013 on our technical trainee programme after finishing her GSCE’s.

“I have always been interested in construction and was looking for a place where I could learn from the best. My careers advisor from my high school told me about Redrow and their day release programme, so I put in an application. I was over the moon when I found out I had been accepted.

“Every day is different because of the various work to be done. Some days it is site visits, others its layout design or sitting with the engineers and understanding their job roles. Sometimes my mornings will start by continuing where I left off the previous work day.”

“I am currently focusing on the designs and helping putting in applications for new and existing sites. Most of the time I am given a list of drawings that need to be completed, for a certain site, so an application can be put together. Otherwise I am completing bits and pieces for other people within the department.

“It’s the greatest experience for someone who has recently finished high school and started college”

  • If I were to describe Redrow in 3 words I would use ambitious, progressive and excellence. It’s great to be involved with a company, that’s always looking to raise the standards, in everything they do.
    Steve – Technical Manager

    Our People

Steve joined Redrow in April 2015 as our Technical Manager at Colindale Gardens.

“I was very interested in working on the Colindale Site, as the size, complexity, variety and longevity all looked interesting and an exciting project to be involved with.

I particularly enjoy the variety of work in the Technical Department – no two days are the same! My typical day could involve a whole variety of functions, including chairing design  team meetings, checking consultants’ drawings, reviewing technical fee’s, visiting site to review details, and writing design programmes.

Being a new site; there has been a huge amount of work and effort needed from all of the team, most of whom are all new to the company, to get the site up and running. One of the biggest challenges so far, was the design, build and launch of the Marketing Suite. The end result looks great though, and the first batch of apartments are selling really well!

If I were to describe Redrow in 3 words I would use: ambitious, progressive and excellence. It’s great to be involved with a company, that’s always looking to raise the standards, in everything they do.”

  • Previously working in vehicle recovery/repair, I joined Redrow as a technical traineee and within seven months they promoted me to trainee engineer
    Peter – Trainee Engineer

    Our People

Peter joined us as a technical trainee in 2013. Now a trainee engineer, he’s based in our Yorkshire division.

Previously working in vehicle recovery/repair Peter was actively looking for a job in the construction industry. “I therefore enrolled myself in an AutoCad course and I heard about this opportunity through a friend. I could see there was a lot of potential to learn and progress, so made the decision to apply”.

“I’m glad that I did. Even. The learning has been extensive too. I’ve been on numerous training courses and right now, I’m working towards a Btec with Leeds College.

“The job itself is very rewarding. I spend a lot of my time on site gathering information and inspecting works that have been carried out. I then feed this information back to designers and support them in the production of their AutoCAD drawings.

“My best achievement so far was designing a section of a drainage system. I was able to go onsite and see it being physically installed. Seeing what I had designed going into the ground was a proud moment for me.”

  • This is also a very varied team. There aren’t many careers where being an architect, highway planner, structural engineer and interior designer are all in a day’s work.
    Paul – Technical Director

    Our People

admin-ajaxPromoted to Technical Director with Redrow Homes North West in 2012, Paul joined our graduate training programme in 1998 after graduating from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Civil Engineering with German. He says he loves the variety of his role with us.

“The Technical department is involved in every single stage of the house build process, from the initial land feasibility studies right through to the delivery of final layouts and drawings to our sales teams. You see whole new communities take shape, which makes it incredibly rewarding.

“This is also a very varied team. There aren’t many careers where being an architect, highway planner, structural engineer and interior designer are all in a day’s work, but when you join Technical, you can be involved in all of those things and more. That does make it challenging, but there’s exceptional training and development on offer. And at Redrow, the more you develop your skills, the sooner you can progress up through the business.”

  • The company really does care about its employees — and that’s reflected both in the development and progression prospects.
    Lauren – Sustainability Technician

    Our People

Lauren JamesLauren is currently a trainee within our Research & Sustainability department. She studied Architectural Design and Technology at university.

“My role here is fast-moving and extremely varied. A lot of my time is spent doing standard assessment procedure (SAP) calculations, which are needed to demonstrate compliance with building regulations.

“I also really like the research dimension of my role. I’ll often look at innovative products — such as new wireless devices —to see if we can incorporate them into our homes and make them more energy efficient.

Even though I’ve only been here a relatively short time, I’ve had so many great experiences. My best day so far was the day I became an accredited energy assessor. This enabled me to perform my tasks within the department promptly with precision. I’ve had so much great training here. The company really does care about its employees — and that’s reflected both in the development and progression prospects.”
