PLACING him in the top 1% of his profession, former Redrow apprentice turned award winning site manager Dan Cato has scooped one of construction’s top industry honours – after less than two years in the job.
Dan Cato, 24, from Fleetwood, won the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) coveted Seal of Excellence award – the next step up from the Pride in the Job ‘Quality’ award he won earlier this year.
A site manager at The Pavilion, Redrow’s development in Poulton-le-Fylde, Dan began his career on Redrow’s award-winning apprenticeship programme.
He said: “I was delighted to win and achieve a goal I’ve had since I became a site manager in January last year. I started as an apprentice joiner with Redrow when I left school. I moved up to become an assistant to two other site managers, Shaun Phoenix and Stuart Bullough, who were both award winners; and they instilled in me the desire to do well and aim for the best.
“I didn’t want to let them down but, even more than that, I didn’t want to let myself down, so I put pressure on myself to achieve the standards needed to win. I could never have done it alone. A site manager is only as good as the group of lads he works with and I have had a brilliant team at The Pavilion. I’d like to add my thanks to the NHBC for making the awards ceremony so special for the winners.”
The NHBC’s Pride in the Job Awards has been highlighting excellence in the field for over 35 years and is dedicated to recognising site managers who achieve the highest standards in housebuilding. Around 16,000 site managers undergo the judging process in small, medium, large and specialist housebuilder categories.
Judging for the awards includes spot checks of the day-to-day running of sites, plus assessment across 38 areas of site management, including each manager’s technical knowledge, consistency in the build process, leadership and organisational skills.
Dan was also Highly Commended at the NHBC Health & Safety awards earlier this year.
Keith Collard, construction director for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), added: “We’re extremely proud of Dan, not least because he has won this award less than two years into his career as a site manager. Dan started with us as an apprentice joiner and showed great promise from day one. It’s great to see him fulfilling his ambition to win this award. He is a great team player and leads by example on site.”
For those interested in the homes Dan and his team are responsible for building at The Pavilion, a fully-furnished show home is open daily from 10am to 5.30pm. For more information see www.redrow.co.uk/thepavilion or call 01253 275818.
