EMPLOYERS working with the West Midlands Construction University Technical College (UTC) were delighted to see plans coming to life last week, when they visited the school’s new £10m building at the former Springfield Brewery site in Wolverhampton.
The University of Wolverhampton, a key sponsor of the UTC, acquired the 12 acre former brewery land in 2014 and has been working with the UTC team to develop a brand new state of the art building for the Construction and IT students to occupy later this year. The UTC opened in September 2015 and is currently in temporary accommodation at Northwood Park.
UTCs are being set up throughout the UK to integrate technical, practical and academic learning and create an environment where students can thrive and develop the abilities that industry needs. Alongside GCSEs and A Levels, the UTC offers 14-19 year olds specialist qualifications in Construction and IT. It brings together trade bodies and local employers who will help steer the curriculum, and provide work related learning experiences to improve the students’ employability.
Bruce Boughton, People Development Manager, from Lovell Partnerships, said: ‘We regularly meet with the UTC team, and have been looking at drawings for some months. Seeing first-hand the construction progress has been fantastic. The new space will give these students a real advantage as they continue to develop their skills as the next generation of construction professionals.’
Tom Macdonald, Principal of West Midlands Construction UTC, added: ‘Our students will have access to some top class facilities including state of the art design studios, civil engineering laboratories, teaching and administration spaces and a cybercafé as well as our School in Architecture. We are delighted our employer partners will have a strong presence at the UTC with their adoption of classrooms which will help us deliver our specialist curriculum.’
The Springfield Brewery regeneration project has already won the ‘Education or Healthcare Structures Award’ at the Institute of Structural Engineers West Midlands Regional Awards.
