Opportunities with Redrow

Trainee Site Assistant Programme

Aimed at developing promising people within our business, trainees are generally chosen from our site-based teams; it could be that they’re working as a forklift truck driver, labourer or an apprentice, for example; or may be recruited directly onto the programme. Develop your career in construction using your existing skills, or bring with you practicality, problem solving and management potential from outside the industry, either way the programme is an excellent way to progress.

If you join us in any of those roles, this programme could be your next big step. It will give you the knowledge, understanding and experience you need to become an Assistant Site Manager, working towards an NVQ in Site Supervision as well as BTEC level 3 in Construction and the Built Environment.

The Trainee Site Assistant Programme represents a fantastic opportunity to join Redrow’s experienced and highly successful construction management teams. If this sounds like a challenge you would relish, we want to hear from you.

  • There are plenty of opportunities at Redrow, great people and a large support network.
Ed Thomson – Trainee Quantity Surveyor

    Our People

Ed ThomsonEd started on our Commercial Apprentice Programme in September 2014 and has progressed into the role of Trainee Quantity Surveyor.

“I always wanted to work in the construction industry – so when I heard about the Apprentice Scheme, I decided to apply. Now, a year and a half later, I have been promoted to the role of Trainee Quantity Surveyor.

On a typical day I could be involved in a number of things, whether this is take offs, quantifying works, tendering new sites or meeting with sub-contractors. My role comes with a lot of variety and I particularly enjoy the fast paced environment and diverse range of jobs I could be involved in during the week.

Whilst I have been at Redrow I have completed my BTEC Level 3 in Construction in the Built Environment, as well as my Edexcel Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Surveying, Property and Maintenance. I will also be starting my HNC degree in September in Quantity Surveying with Redrow’s support.

There are plenty of opportunities at Redrow, great people and a large support network. I would definitely recommend working for Redrow, they honestly care about their employees wellbeing and enjoy giving us opportunities to thrive.”

  • The quality of our homes is something I am proud of and keeping to programme is crucial on site.
    Mark – Trainee Site Assistant

    Our People

Mark ByrneMark started at Redrow in July 2015 as a Site Operative and was later promoted to Trainee Site Assistant based at Pennine Grange, Tamworth.

“I heard about the Trainee Site Assistant programme whilst working as a Site Operative on Pennine Grange. It was job security and the reputation that Redrow has that attracted me to the trainee programme.

On a typical day on site I could be doing a number of things. For example, organising and liasing with trades to make sure that the construction process runs smoothly, checking plots are ready for sign off, snagging them to note down any problems that need resolving, and ordering materials to make sure that our contractors can do their jobs.

In my role I most enjoy meeting our targets on site and seeing the finished product. The quality of our homes is something I am proud of and keeping to programme is crucial on site. I also enjoy the pressure that comes with it, as I work well knowing we have targets to meet.

As I continue my development at Redrow I want to move further up the career ladder to Assistant Site Manager and then a Site Manager.”

  • I’ve worked with people who have taken a real interest in me as a person, and in my progression through the industry.
    Benn – Trainee Site Assistant

    Our People

Ben-smithBenn joined Redrow as an Apprentice Carpenter in September 2009. Over the three-year programme, Benn achieved an NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry as well as gaining all sorts of technical and practical skills. After completing his apprenticeship, he was promoted to the role of Trainee Site Assistant.

“I was interested in learning a trade to help improve my employment prospects, so I registered with the CITB – the Construction Industry Training Board. They suggested that I should do some research on construction companies in my local area, and Redrow caught my eye as the house designs looked so good.

“I’ve worked with people who have taken a real interest in me as a person, and in my progression through the industry. My managers have made time for me not only to pass on the benefit of their experience, but also to explain why things are done in a certain way to achieve the highest possible standards of quality and customer service. That’s made my time here really enjoyable and based on my experiences, I’d definitely recommend Redrow to other people who want to work for a good company that values effort and honesty.”

  • It’s the greatest experience for someone who has recently finished high school and started college
    Brianne – Trainee Designer

    Our People

brianeBrianne joined our Midlands division in 2013 on our technical trainee programme after finishing her GSCE’s.

“I have always been interested in construction and was looking for a place where I could learn from the best. My careers advisor from my high school told me about Redrow and their day release programme, so I put in an application. I was over the moon when I found out I had been accepted.

“Every day is different because of the various work to be done. Some days it is site visits, others its layout design or sitting with the engineers and understanding their job roles. Sometimes my mornings will start by continuing where I left off the previous work day.”

“I am currently focusing on the designs and helping putting in applications for new and existing sites. Most of the time I am given a list of drawings that need to be completed, for a certain site, so an application can be put together. Otherwise I am completing bits and pieces for other people within the department.

“ it’s the greatest experience for someone who has recently finished high school and started college”

  • Even though I haven't been here that long, I've learnt so much
    Peter – Trainee Engineer

    Our People

Peter joined us as a technical trainee in 2013. Now a trainee engineer, he’s based in our Yorkshire division.

Previously working in vehicle recovery/repair Peter was actively looking for a job in the construction industry. “I therefore enrolled myself in an AutoCad course and I heard about this opportunity through a friend. I could see there was a lot of potential to learn and progress, so made the decision to apply”.

“I’m glad that I did. Even. The learning has been extensive too. I’ve been on numerous training courses and right now, I’m working towards a Btec with Leeds College.

“The job itself is very rewarding. I spend a lot of my time on site gathering information and inspecting works that have been carried out. I then feed this information back to designers and support them in the production of their AutoCAD drawings.

“My best achievement so far was designing a section of a drainage system. I was able to go onsite and see it being physically installed. Seeing what I had designed going into the ground was a proud moment for me.”

  • I enjoy being involved with a range of different details and scenarios. Each day seems to be a massive learning curve.
    Antony – Trainee Technical Co-ordinator

    Our People

    Antony

Antony joined Redrow in August 2015 as a Technical Graduate, and was soon after promoted to a Trainee Technical Co-ordinator. He was particularly interested in our Technical Graduate Scheme after hearing positive feedback about Redrow and the Graduate opportunities we provide.

“I am widely involved in the general management and co-ordination of a number of projects we have going in the London Boroughs. My weeks tend to be split; I spend roughly 3-4 days in our main office and 1 or 2 days based on site. When in the office my days are normally filled up with various meetings and correspondence with a wide range of consultants. Then, when I am on site, I review various drawing packages and walk around site to ensure that the construction process is running smoothly.

I enjoy being involved with a range of different details and scenarios. Each day seems to be a massive learning curve and I am particularly proud of the knowledge I have attained so far. In particular, being able to confidently take on and complete various packages and tenders involved with the construction of complex projects.
